The old saying ‘practice makes perfect’ may be overstating it a little, but practice is certainly a key factor in sporting success. Health and fitness are also clearly significant. A third major factor which is more frequently overlooked is our state of mind during the sporting activity.
Many highly skilled athletes and performers fail at the critical moment because they have somehow accessed a negative or self-defeating state of mind. No-one does this on purpose, but actually, acquiring a bad habit or a negative state of mind requires just as much practice and follows exactly the same process as learning a positive skill. In fact it is surprising just how quickly we can acquire a habit – good, bad or indifferent.
The good news is that acquiring and accessing positive states of mind is as easy as acquiring and accessing negatives states. If you can do one, then you can do the other. Hypnotherapy can be incredibly effective in sports because it allows us to mentally rehearse patterns of success with real intensity in a way which makes the process automatic.
